Chapter 1
If you had asked her at any point in her life if she would ever be here, if she would ever be this happy, she would have said, Hell, no!
Here she was on this unusually warm September day in the Adirondacks. She sat on a blanket waiting for her husband to bring her the food he had promised. She could not believe she had actually been talked into this camping trip, let alone this picnic. But there she was, and to top it all off, she was happily married to the most incredible man in the world.
She and Jax had married almost a year ago to this day, and after that everything had become even better. They took an incredible honeymoon in France. Then, Jax recovered ELQ and gave it back to her as a Christmas present, which they both happily celebrated.
After she was reinstated as the Chief Executive Officer of ELQ, she appointed AJ as second in command. She did this because she felt she could trust her brother, and it would
irk both Edward and Ned. Edward had made many futile attempts to oust Skye, even trying to recruit Ned, who had decided to devote himself to L&B Records.
But now, things seemed to be turning in a different direction. Edward seemed to be backing off. So, Jax had managed to trick Skye into agreeing to go on this camping trip.
Skye blissfully sat there, listening to the birds chirping and having a sickening sweet time, when she saw a woman. There was this frazzled looking woman walking through the camp site.
Are you ok, Skye asked the petite, dark-haired woman.
Um, yeah, Im fine. And then, the frazzled woman ran off.
Skye shook her head. It was an odd situation. And what was even odder was the woman seemed somewhat familiar. There was something about her face, and the beauty mark on it. Then, Skye realized this woman was a dead ringer for her, for that one long lost love of Jaxs life. She was the spitting image of Brenda Barrett. Oh my God, Skye muttered to herself.
Then, along came Jax with two fish on his pole. Everything ok, he asked his wife. Skye did not respond to his question until he waved the fish right in front of her face. You ok, he asked. She nodded. Who was that woman you were talking to, he asked her.
You saw her, she asked.
Well, from a distance, when I came back up over the mountainside. Something seemed
very strange about her. Is everything ok?
Yeah. I think she was just a little lost.
Well, we should help her.
Jax started to head off to go after the woman, but Skye stopped him. No. She...uh...she did have a cell phone. If she needs help, she can call for it.
But she probably wouldnt be able to get a signal up here, Jax reasoned.
Well, theres that call box you showed me, she said to him. Im sure she can use it, if she needs help.
Yeah, youre probably right, he responded, then he waved the two fish in her face again.
So, what do you say we clean these fish?
Skye laughed at him. Not on your life. As she laughed, she continued to think about the woman she had just seen.
What If...
Chapter 2
My---my, big sister, you look absolutely radiant, AJ said to a very red Skye, who was scratching away on her arm. He walked to her desk and tossed a file on it. This would be
that report on the pharmaceutical division you requested.
Thank you, she said. These mosquito bites are killing me. She continued to scratch her arm.
I take it the trip to the mountains was a rip-roaring disaster, he said with sarcasm.
No. I actually did enjoy it, she answered with a smile.
With the exception of the bug bites and the sun burn, then?
Yeah, she answered. Oh, and the horrible fish that Jax caught.
You do realize there are things you can use to avoid the bug bites and sun burn, AJ said, as he watched her continued to scratch. In fact, I think the pharmaceutical division sells
some of them.
I really didnt think about packing those things, she responded.
Uh-huh, AJ said with an all-knowing grin upon his face.
Anyhow, whats the old goat been up to, Skye asked about Edward.
You know Caladryl might help, he told her, as he nodded toward her arm.
Ill have my secretary pick some of that up. Now, AJ, whats grandfather been up to?
He recruited Ned to help him get ELQ back, he told her.
Yeah, Skye said as she waited for the other shoe to drop on the issue.
But Ned didnt take him up on the deal. See, Ned claims to be focused on running L&B. But you know Ned. I wouldnt count him out of the fight for ELQ for long. AJ sat on the
corner of the desk. Hell eventually get the urge to get back into the swing of things. And when he does, hell be relentless. Skye had drifted off from listening to AJ. She was in her own thoughts, which had become apparent. He waved his hand in front of her.
Whatre you thinking about? Skye was still in her thoughts, and she hadnt heard what he had asked. Skye! The building is on fire, he shouted to get her attention.
What?!?
Did you hear a word I said, he asked.
Well, we were talking about Edward, werent we?
Something on your mind, he asked her, knowing her mind was up to something else besides worrying about Edward or Ned.
Oh, just a piece of the past, Skye said, as she picked up the file hed laid on her desk.
She stood and walked around the office, pretending to look over the file, while AJ could tell she was somewhere else.
I think you better tell me what you meant by that, he said.
Well... Skye gave a long, thoughtful pause. AJ braced himself on the edge of the table to hear what his sister was about to tell him. He could not take it any longer, and he finally burst out with, Will you just spill it?
I need your help with something, she told her brother.
Id help you with just about anything, he told her. Skye sat there silent, still pondering whether or not she should tell him. Hey, sis, he finally spoke. If Im going to help you
with whatever this, youre going to have tell me what it is.
Um, ok, she slowly spoke. I need to know everything you know about Brenda Barrett.
What If...
Chapter 3
Jax flew over the couch next to where Skye sat. She was looking at a file folder. Whatcha lookin at, he asked, as he tried to grab the folder. Skye managed to yank it back before he could look at it. Some sort of top secret business plot, he asked.
Maybe it is, or maybe it isnt, Skye teased with a seductive smile. She then wrapped an arm around Jax. They began kissing. She quickly and secretly slid the file under papers
sitting on the coffee table.
Oh, well, maybe Ill just have to seduce this top secret business plot out of you, Jax said with a smirk. He quickly and swiftly picked Skye up off her feet, and took her back to the bedroom.
AJ sat in the office at Jakes. So, whats the deal, Junior, Coleman asked, as he walked in the room. Why couldnt you just hire the private dick yourself?
I dont know why it matters to you. AJ pulled out his wallet. Especially as long as you are getting your money.
Just a little curious, thats all. Coleman stroke his chin.
Well, you know what they say about curiosity, AJ said to his henchman.
You know, you couldve avoided this whole situation, Tracy said to her father, as she entered through the side door of his private study.
Tracy, he gruffly greeted his wayward daughter.
Daddy, so good to be back home, she said to him.
Yes, Im sure it is after youve been tossed out on your keister so many times, he spoke.
Ha, Tracy laughed loudly.
Edward finally turned to face her. So, whats your plan, he asked.
The next morning, Jax woke to find Skye rushing around the bedroom dressing. I guess I wasnt able to seduce that big business secret out of you, he joked.
Sorry, Charlie, she said to him. Now, I have an important meeting this morning, she told him, as she finished dressing. Now, I have to go. She rushed to him. As he lay in
bed, she kissed him. I love you. Then, she rushed out.
What are you up to, Skye, he asked himself out loud.
Hmmm..., AJ said to himself, as he stood at his bedroom window. There were some advantages to him still living at the Quartermaine mansion. One of those was the opportunity to spy on the family and the comings and goings of their guests. And, as AJ finished tying his tie, he saw what appeared to his aunt Tracy.
Ok, AJ, Skye said as she and her brother walked into her office, you have something more for me?
Yeah, another private eyes file on the history of Brenda Barrett from birth to death.
Skye went to grab it from him, but AJ had a tight grip. She finally looked at him to see
what he wanted. Something else?
Yeah.
What is it?
We might have a problem, he told her.
And what would that be, she asked.
Before AJ could answer, the door flung open and Jax stood there, holding a file.
What If...
Chapter 4
Jax!
Jax, such a dramatic entry, AJ commented.
What is this about, Jax shouted, ignoring AJ, as he came towards his wife with a file on display for her to see.
AJ stood on his tip-toes, looking at it. Oh, that would be the file about Brenda, he said in a smart-ass tone.
Jax looked at his brother-in-law, swore under his breath, then looked at Skye. Why do you have a file on Brenda?
Jax, its innocent, Skye pleaded with him.
Innocent? Skye, I dont understand why you would feel the need to have a private investigator dig up information on Brenda.
Um, hey, AJ said, holding up his hand. I can attest to the fact that its all very innocent.
Oh really, Jax said with venom. With AJs involvement in this, he had a bad feeling about this file. Well, Id really like for my wife to explain it to me, AJ!
Yeah. Skye hesitated, as she tried to think of a valid excuse for having the file.
Well, Jax, I think the reason shes hesitating and didnt tell you earlier is that it has to do with business.
Business, Jax questioned.
Yes, business, Skye said, as she tried to figure out what AJ was thinking and talking about. She kept looking at her brother, and suddenly some sort of telepathy or something
clicked. Ive been pursuing a deal with Barrett Industries, and I pulled out all the files on the CEO.
Julia, AJ said.
Yes, Julia. And apparently, Edward kept extensive files on the competition, Skye said.
Yes, the old curmudgeon has always been big on knowing his opponents weaknesses, Jax said, as he started to calm and believe Skyes story.
Yeah, AJ said, giving his brother-in-law a pat on the back. See it was really all innocent.
Yes, Skye said very unsteadily.
Tracy entered her room at the Port Charles Hotel to find someone sitting in the dark. As she went to turn on the light, she heard, Hello mother. With the flip of the switch, Ned
sat in front of her.
Ned, my dear son. Tracy held out her arms to welcome him.
What the hell are you doing in Port Charles, he asked.
Im working on something, she told her son.
With grandfather. Tracy gave Ned a shocked look. Yes, I know about your visit, as does Junior. So, whats grandfather up to that he couldnt get someone else to help him with?
Your grandfather isnt up to anything, she responded. Ned heartily laughed. Its true, and neither am I, for that matter.
Then, what are you doing here, he asked.
In Port Charles or at the hotel?
Mother, please! What are you doing in Port Charles?
I just wanted to reconnect with my family, sweetheart, she said, trying to sound sincere, but failing miserably.
Huh, huh, Ned said, nodding his head, knowing Tracy was up to something. I bet this has to do with grandfather wanting to get ELQ back.
Well, he was failed by his heir apparent, Tracy said, pointing back to her dear Ned.
So, youre working with grandfather to oust Skye from ELQ?
Maybe, maybe not. Tracy went over to the desk and put her purse down. She turned back to her son. Now, do you want to tell me why you turned down your grandfathers
offer?
Because I have other interests, he answered.
Oh, like, say rock n roll and groupies, or maybe some personal soul searching, huh?
That and not being stabbed in the back once again by grandfather, which is what is going
to happen to you when all is said and done.
Youre underestimating me, she said.
Oh, I dont know. Grandfathers as cunning as ever, Ned said. Anyhow, I just came to warn you.
Its nice to know you still care, son.
Its not that I care. Its just that after the fall out, well, I might get back in the game.
Ned grinned, just as there was a knock at the door.
What If...
Chapter 5
Um, arent you going to answer that, Ned asked his mother.
Tracy walked to the door and opened it slightly. Hello, she spoke to the person in the hall. Nows not a good time, she said. Please, go, she demanded. Tracy slammed the door shut and turned back to her son.
So, who was that really, Ned asked, as he started towards the door to look for himself.
Tracy stopped him for a moment. Um, just the maid, sweetheart.
The maids dont come around this time of day. Ned went to the door and opened it to find that whoever had been there was gone. He turned back to her. I guess I wasnt supposed to find out who that was.
Tracy shrugged her shoulders. I dont know.
Ok, Jax said to Skye, as he sat across the desk from her. Now that AJs gone, why do you really have that file, he asked her.
Excuse me, Skye said with indignation.
Skye, he said with displeasure.
Youre asking me why I only had the file on Brenda, arent you?
Yes. That thought had been plaguing me.
Well...I... Skye initially struggled with her answer. ...I have to admit there was some curiosity. Jax looked surprised. She was the love of your life. I just wanted to know...I just wanted to know something more about her. Thats all, really, honestly.
Jax stood and slowly walked to the other side of Skyes desk. He put his hands on her shoulders and began to rub them. Skye, Brenda was the love of the first part of my life.
But shes gone. Im with you. Youre the love of my life, Mrs. Jacks. Jax spun Skyes chair around to have her face him. He pulled her close and held her tight while they kissed.
Mmmm... Skye broke away from Jaxs lips briefly. I do have business I have to get to.
Yes, yes, you do. Jax gave her a big grin, as he continued to kiss her body.
Jax, you have to stop, she said, as she tried to push him away.
No. I cant stop, he said.
This business is very important, she insisted, but could not resist his kiss and touch.
Nothing is more important than this right now. The two of us.
Jax, its ELQ.
Its always ELQ, he continued through the kisses.
Well, its important, because its possible I could lose this company, she told him.
Jax backed away. What are you talking about? Why would you think you could lose ELQ?
I dont know, Skye said, as she backed away from him. She started to pace and chew at her fingernail.
Well, then why would you think theres a problem?
Because AJ came here to warn me about something.
And?
Thats about the time when you came storming into the office.
So I interrupted business?
Im not sure. Jax, AJ was very cryptic about it, Skye told him. All he said was we might have a problem.
Well, that settles it, Jax said. Better batten down the hatches, he mocked her fear.
Jax, this could be serious. Edwards circling like a crow ready to pick at roadkill.
You think Edwards still focused on getting ELQ back?
Thats his one goal in life, Skye told her husband, getting his company back.
Getting HIS company back, Jax questioned.
Yes. Skye nodded.
Hmmmm...maybe I was wrong in getting ELQ back for you, Jax said.
What If...
Chapter 6
What do you mean, Jax, Skye asked her husband.
What I mean is if you still see ELQ as Edwards company, then hell get a hold of it.
Jax, I wasnt saying I believe ELQ is Edwards. I was saying it that way because thats what Edward believes.
Just as long as its not what you believe.
Oh, its not. Its not what I believe. She began stalking around the office. I believe ELQ is all mine, she said with confidence. But...Im afraid Edwards going to try and
take it away.
Well, you know what you have to do then, Jax asked her.
Make sure he doesnt take MY company from me, she said rather proudly, as she stopped at the window and looked out over the city.
Now, thats my wife, Jax said with a wide smile. He walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her, kissing the back of her neck. Youll win this round, and youll finally
get Edward to back down.
I love you, she said.
I love you, too, he said with a giggle of delight.
AJ walked toward the elevator at the Port Charles Hotel, on his way to a meeting upstairs. He happened to see Tracy head into the Grill. Hmmm..., he spoke to himself, still
wondering what she was up to. He pushed the up button for the elevator. He stood and patiently waited. The doors opened, he stepped onto the elevator not paying attention. As
the doors closed, he saw her. He saw the beautiful brunette. He saw Brenda Barrett. He could barely catch his breath. She was right, he muttered, as the doors closed.
Tracy sat in the Grill, Edward joined her just as her cell phone rang. Excuse me, daddy, she said, as she answered. Edward looked disgusted by the interruption. Tracy Quartermaine, she said. Yes...thats perfect. Good work, she told the person on the other end. She put her phone away and sat silently, grinning like a Cheshire cat.
Well, what was that, Edward demanded to know.
Tracy gave a hearty laugh. Daddy, that was the final piece of the puzzle.
Oh really?
Yes, really, she replied, knowing he wanted more details. But she wasnt willing to give them, not wanting to tip her hand.
AJ called his appointment on the way up in the elevator and canceled. Then, he hit the down button. He dialed out on his cell phone.
Skye and Jax were on the floor of Skyes office. They were getting dressed, when Skyes cell phone rang. Mmmm...I better get that, she said, as she searched through the clothes to find her phone. She found it and answered. Yes, she struggled to say, as Jax tickled her.
Come on. That can wait for later, Jax said to his wife, as he tried to pry the phone away.
Skye, AJ shouted on the other end.
Hey, stop it, Skye said to Jax. Its AJ, she told him. It might be something important. Jax still wouldnt give her the phone. It might be business, she said, and he finally gave it to her. AJ, she frantically said, wondering what was going on.
You and Jax playing tag or something, AJ joked.
AJ, is this an important call or did you just call me to tease me?
No. It sounds as if my brother-in-law is doing enough of that.
AJ!
Sorry.
Ok, now, why did you call me, she asked, as she watched Jax continue to dress.
What If...
Chapter 7
Something big just happened, AJ told his sister over his cell phone.
Something just happened?
I saw her, AJ said rather cryptically.
AJ, what are you talking about, Skye asked her brother, not exactly connecting the dots
as she was distracted by her husband.
Im talking about her! You know, Jaxs one true love, Brenda. I just saw her here at the hotel.
AJ, thats not funny, Skye said to him, thinking he was joking about seeing her.
Im not joking around, he told her bluntly, as he got off the hotel elevator. Look, she just took off from here. Maybe I can catch up, or find out where she went. You...um...can
you meet me...uh...you and the crocodile hunter are still at the office..., AJ asked, as he frantically thought about the situation. ...Just meet me in the park in an hour.
Youre sure its her, Skye asked with everything finally sinking in for her.
Something wrong, Jax asked.
No. No, its nothing, she told her husband.
Skye, AJ shouted from the other end of the line, afraid he had lost his her attention.
Yeah?
Youll meet me, AJ asked.
Yes. Then, well get to the bottom of this, Skye told him.
See ya, sis. AJ ran to the hotel doorman. Hey there, did you see a beautiful, petite brunette woman with a...with a beauty mark...oh...right about here, AJ said as he pointed
to his face.
Yes, I did, Mr. Quartermaine.
Can you tell me where she went, AJ asked.
Yes...
Tracy stood at the doorway of the Grill watching AJ take off. She laughed heartily. Ha...ha...Junior took the bait, she said, sounding pleased with herself.
Edward came up from behind her. Care to explain, he asked.
Just some business, she replied.
You said it was important, Jax said to his wife.
It is, Skye replied. Look, I need to get dressed. I have somewhere I have to be.
Jax gave her pitiful look. So, thats it? Youre just going to love me and leave me, he joked.
Im sorry. Skye kissed Jax. But its very important business.
Something about Edward and ELQ?
Possibly, she said, trying to get Jax to back off from asking her anything more about AJs phone call or the business she had to attend to.
Oh, well... Jax finished tying his tie. Ill leave you to it. He kissed her. I love you.
Jax walked out of the office, as Skye watched him. As soon as the door shut behind him, Skye went back to buttoning up her blouse. Then, she whispered to herself, I love you, too.
Tracy and Edward had just finished their lunch. Edward grabbed the napkin from his lap and threw it back on the table. Now, tell me who was AJ traipsing after, and what does it have to do with getting ELQ back.
Tracy patted her fathers hand on the table. Daddy, dont worry.
Edwards eyes filled with serious anger. You are going to tell me what you are up to now, or you will find yourself on the outside of ELQ and this family. FOREVER!
Ok, ok. AJs chasing after a ghost.
Excuse me?
Brenda Barrett is back in town. Tracy picked up her wine glass and tilted it towards her father. Cheers. She gave him a satisfied grin, as he sat there completely stunned.
You mean to tell me that Brenda is still alive? Edward finally managed to get the words out. Tracy simply shrugged in response to his question.
AJ stood in the park. He was pacing around when Skye finally made her way to him. Hey.
Its about time you got here, he admonished her.
Im sorry, Im sorry, she said to her brother. So, did you find her? Did you catch up with her?
No such luck, AJ told Skye.
So, Brenda is just roaming around Port Charles? AJ, we have to do something about this.
I know. Thats why I had to do something to insure that we were the first ones to get our hands on Brenda.
And what would this something be?
Um, well, AJ said, taking a long pause, as he looked at Skye and realized that she would not be happy about what he had done.
AJ!
AJ, what have you done?
AJ scratched his head, trying to think of the best way to put it. Um, I kind of recruited some help for us.
You recruited some help for us? AJ nodded along, as his sister spoke. Why do I think that I am not going to like this?
I dont know, AJ said sarcastically, as he shrugged. Maybe youre just a pessimist?
AJ. Skye stepped closer to her brother. You better tell me what you have done, and you better tell me now.
Well... There was another extremely long pause, as AJ stared at Skye. Carlys on the lookout for her.
Carly.
Yes, Carly.
Carly Corinthos? You recruited Carly Corinthos to help us?
Yes, he said, as he looked down at the ground.
What the hell makes you think that Carly is going to want to help the two of us? Neither
of us could possibly be on Carlys list of favorite people.
No, but she has a valid reason for helping us, AJ said.
And what would that reason be?
