Jax turned the television off, throwing the remote onto the endtable. Blinded by his tears, he headed towards the bedroom. As he stepped over the threshold, the memories came flooding back. Every time that they had made love. The night he had learned about Emma. The grief they had felt over losing Joseph. He found it hard to breathe as memory after memory went through him, Backing out of the room, he ran into another warm body. Turning around, he wasn't surprised to see Rae standing there.
"How are you doing,?" she asked in a soft voice.
He pushed past her. "How do you think I'm doing? My wife just....She just....She's gone," he finished. Ending up at the window, he was surprised to find that it had started to rain. He ran his finger down the window tracing the raindrops. "What I'm I going to do without my happily ever after?" His voice was filled with so much pain that she almost felt guilty for what she was going to say.
"I still don't believe that she's dead," she blurted out. She saw his back stiffen, but he didn't turn to face her. "She's my daughter. I would know. I would feel it in my soul."
"I saw her body," he hissed out.
"But I didn't. And I won't accept it until I do."
"I won't let you see her." He turned around to face her, tears streaking his cheeks. "She wouldn't want you to see her like that."
"She wouldn't want you to either."
"Someone had to do it. And I'm the one person who was the closest to her." Walking until he stood in front of her, he grasped her arm gently. "She needed me there."
She pulled away from his grasp and sat down on the couch. "I'll never accept this," she said simply. "I'll never accept it."
"You have to Rae. You have to face the truth."
"No," she said fiercely. "Maybe you can accept it, but I can't. Not my baby girl. She would never leave her family."
"You think that I want to accept this," he choked out. He sat down on the couch beside her. "I don't but I have to. Taking her hand in his, he held it tightly. "But I have that little girl in there to take care of. I have to stay strong for her. She just lost her mother."
"Daddy," a voice called. Both Rae and Jax looked up to find Emma standing in the doorway to her room. She held her blanket clutched in both hands.
"Come here, baby," Jax replied. Emma ran to her dad, jumping in his lap. "What's the matter?"
"I had a bad dream."
Jax looked at her with concern evident in his eyes. "Why don't you tell your grandmother and me about it?"
Emma's eyes grew dark as she spoke. "I dreamed that a bad man had mommy. And that he was being mean to her."
Startled Rae turned Emma around to face her. "What happened next, baby girl?"
She squeezed her eyes shut in concentration. "Mommy was trying to escape through a window and...."
"Then what,?" Rae asked in a frustrated tone. Jax shot her a dirty look, but she ignored it.
Emma looked close to tears as she tried to remember. "I don't know Grandma." She crawled into her lap. "Are you mad at me?"
Her eyes grew soft and she hugged her granddaughter to her tightly. "Oh, no sweetheart. I'm just concerned about your dream that's all."
Emma pulled away from her chest. "What does it mean?"
"What?"
"Mommy told me that dreams mean something. So what does my dream mean?"
"It was just a dream, sweetheart. It doesn't have to mean anything," Jax answered. "But what do you think it means?"
She clasped her hands together and thought for a moment before she spoke. "It means that mommy wants to come back to us. She's trying to get to us."
"Now, Emma," Jax began gently. "We discussed this last night."
"I know," she said stubbornly crossing her arms. "But you asked me about it."
He ran his finger down her arm. "I know, I did. I'm sorry."
She went back into his lap and kissed him on the cheek. "It's okay, daddy. You just miss mommy."
