Chapter 20
Skye woke up alone, scared, and confused. For a minute she thought that everything was okay. That it had all been a dream. That Jax wasn't fighting for his life. That Brenda had never shown up nor had Jerry. But then it all came back to her. The gun shot, Jax falling to the floor. The doctor coming in....She sat up straight in bed. THE DOCTOR COMING IN. The doctor saying that Jax was....
The door creaked open then, and in walked her mother with Lady Jane and John. She turned her head to look at them, and was surprised to see no tears in their eyes. Her eyes lite up with hope. Maybe the doctor had been wrong. Maybe she had ben wrong in assuming the worst.
"Is he okay? When can I see him? He's going to be okay, isn't he?" Her face was so full of hope that everyone had a hard time looking her in the face.
"Skye," Rae said gently. She sat down on the bed next to her daughter, and wistfully took her hand in her own. Skye satup straighter in the bed, proping her back against the pillows. She watched as Jax's parents came to the other side of the bed, and Lady Jane took her other hand. "There is no easy way to say this but...."
"But what mom? He is going to be okay, isn't he," Skye asked in a small voice. "I can't raise this child without him. Mom," she pleaded. " he is going to be okay?"
"No, Skye he's not okay. He's...." Lady Jane covered her mouth with her hand. Tears were seeping between her fingers as she tried to tell Skye the truth. Skye turmed her attention towards Jax's mother. She could feel her pain vibrating from her body.
"He's not....," she began. Her face screwed up in pain. "He's dead,?" she asked in an agonized voice.
Rae rushed to reassure he, if only a little. "Oh,no sweetheart." She swallowed nervously not knowing how Skye was going to take the news. "But he is in a coma," she finished gently.
"A coma? She was confused. "I don't understand. He was....He was shot in the chest." She looked wildly from Jax's parents to her own mother. "How can he be in a coma?"
John's voice was thick with tears when he answered. "During surgery, he developed a blood clot. It um...It cut off the oxygen to his brain."
"How?," she choked out. Tears were blantently running down her checks, but they went unnoticed as she tried to understand the situation.
John absently wiped the tears away from his face. "The doctors don't know anything. What caused the clot, or even if he'll ever wake up."
"He might never wake up?" Skye shook her head violently. "I won't accept that. I have to see him. I have to see him now," she yelled.
"You can't," Rae said gently. Not until you calm down."
"Calm down? CALM DDOWN?" She pointed her finger at Rae. "You want me to be calm at a time like this? I won't calm down. Not until I see Jax with my own eyes."
"Skye this isn't going to do you any good. Nor is it doing the baby any good. You need to focus."
"Focus on what? Not being able to see Jax? Him being in a coma because of me?"
"Skye, this isn't your fault," Lady Jane interrupted. "This is from the twisted mind of Brenda, and to some extent Jerry."
Skye turned a tearful face towards Jane. "But what if it is?"

More Notes: You don't know how tempted I was to have Jax die. I was really tempted. But I decided to put him in a coma, for more emotional depth. That's what I tell myself anyway. I hope you enjoyed it.
